Three out of the five systematic reviews observed participants over an extended period of time (Ostacher, Perlis, Roy, Nierenberg, Calabrese, Stange, Salloum, Sachs, 2010), (Kilbourne, Biswas, Pirraglia, Sajatovic, Williford, Bauer, 2009), (Felicia, Derek, Satre, Weisner, 2006). Sample sizes for the participants being observed ranged from hundreds to several thousand. The other two systematic reviews, reviewed existing studies (Miklowitz, 2008), (Drake, ONeal, Wallach, 2008). All five systematic reviews concluded that, the different psychotherapy techniques decrease mental health symptoms, increases engagement, and modestly decrease substance use (Ostacher, Perlis, Roy, Nierenberg, Calabrese, Stange, Salloum, Sachs, 2010), (Kilbourne,†¦show more content†¦All eight studies were various in race, ethnicities, and genders. However, the most frequent demographic in all the studies was an adult male. The two case studies had very weak sample sizes (Jones, Barrowclough, Callott, Day, Earnshaw, Wilson, 2011), (Biseul, Icick, Seguin, Bellivier, Scott, 2017). Case studies are supposed to have small samples. However, observing less than fifteen participants in a study cannot give an accurate depiction of how effective a treatment is, because it makes it hard to replicate the treatment in other population demographics. All three experimental designs had strong sample sizes. Both the pilot and follow up study completed by (Weiss, Griffin, Kolodzie, Greenfield, 2007), (Weiss, Griffin, Greenfield, Najavits, Wyner, Soto, Hennen, 2000) had a strong sample size. The sample size in the pilot study was 45, and the sample size in the follow up study was 61. This is a strong sample size for experimental designs because it includes various population demographics that make it easier to replicate. The study written by (Smelson,Kalman Losonczy,line,Sambamoorthi,Hill,Ziedonis 2012;2010) had 102 participants that were gathered from an inpatient psychiatric unit. There are many aspects of the novel that portray picaresque through the history and personality of the main character, Huck Finn. From the very beginning of the book when he has been taken in by the Widow Douglas he still sneaks out to wander around and sleep in the woods. In chapter IV (pg. 110 in the Norton Anthology of American Literature) the reader is first exposed to his wandering ways. â€Å" Living in a house, and sleeping in a bed, pulled on me pretty tight, mostly, but before the cold weather I used to slide out and sleep in the woods, sometimes, and so that was a rest to me.† Huck’s preference of sleeping in the woods instead of a bed represents not only Huck’s un-civility and refusal to conform, but also introduces us to him as a wander, a key element in picaresque. In the interactions among these characters, he is simplifying the situation in Vietnam into a personal model to be viewed. Graham Greene developed the attitudes and personalities of his characters almost to be a condensed legend of the countries they represented. In their actions, and opinions formed on them by others, was a reflection of the general feeling overall in Vietnam. Alden Pyle is the title quiet American sent to Vietnam with orders. Seemingly he is quiet because he is the innocent, neutral party coming to aid by selling plastic. He has a good reputation, and is very curt and proper. Na?ve is best to superficially describe his demeanor; he is only trying to help. But ignorance is probably better to this character for hedoes not realize the destruction he is causing and does not realize that he is more meddlesome than helpful. And that is exactly what Graham Greene istrying to portray this characters representation of the United States. Pyle as an individual reflects America as a whole as they were seen as ignorantly trying to interfere in Vietnam, being neutral. But actually harming in trying to help Pyle as a character and as the symbol of his country was portrayed of promising the Vietnamese things, trying to forge for them a new life they did not need nor understand. This is seen with his relationship with Phuong as he woos her away from Thoma s Fowler with promises of skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty. Phuong, can be seen as the innocent country Vietnam whose promising lands pose the stage for a war between the politics of greedier forces. Phuong and the majority of Vietnam, the peasants, know nothing but their simple existence. They farm their rice paddies; they sustain themselves- that is all they know. No matter who wins the war, how will it affect most of thecountry? Will they not go back to doing the same thing they did the day before? And yet you have America coming in monitoring the war, aiding sides,imposing democracy. Very much just confusing the Vietnamese, and confusing the problems already present with promises that the Vietnamese dont quite comprehend. Such is the case with Pyle and Phuong. Pyle like America is distracting the Vietnamese with ideals that are not essential to them, like Phuong who is naively caught up with the grand notions of it all. Thomas Fowler is the main character in The Quiet American and he is the embodiment of his homeland, Great Britain in the story. Greene is portrayingEnglands views of the situation in Vietnam through the eyes of their representative, Fowler. Fowler is not very fond of Pyle and sees his actions as cold and cruel. And yet perhaps as England, he is trying to not get in to involved in emotions of the situation as he claims Phuong is needed by him as only a sexual object. He denounces God, and points out the ignorance in Pyle, yet he says, One has to take sides. If one is to remain human (174). So what side is Fowler on, though he claims he is just there to report the happenings of the war. Green may have pointed out some kind of dissention between England and the United States with the love triangle set up between the two and Phuong. Greene subtly and deftly intertwines the lives of his characters with their larger counterparts. Are they both trying to helpVietnam? Or are they simply medd ling in affairs that dont concern them. I sing song to wish everyone Merry Christmas. The city also has a Christmas parade. I take a Christmas boat. This boat tour for me around downtown. The church is a busy place to celebrate during the holiday. I decorate the church with holly. I help in many ways to provide things for poor people. I cook turkey with honey, spaghetti, and roast beef to serve for Christmas dinner. I like to devote my time and effort to show my love to people at the Christmas time. For this holiday, my house is decorated with ornaments inside and outside. On the front side of my house, I make big smile with lights. On my wall, I create an Wu 2 animated Santa' snowman. Also, on the lawn I scatter deer. My door has a circle-string wreath with tinkle bells. I decorate pine trees by hanging them with brightly colored ornaments, twinkling lights, and some stockings.
